Last night I felt you hugged me as I slept. I know you are doing fine where you are, Alonzo. I know you are with us even now. I just miss seeing you.
A service will be held for you this evening at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Spring Branch. I hope you can make it.
Love you always, Lonz.
Love,
Mom

Remembering Alonzo as the anniversary of his passing approaches:
His life story is one of laughter, love, adventure, curiosity and LIFE!
He played baseball in youth leagues every year after he turned 5 until he was 10 or 11. He played basketball and football outside of school and played football in middle school. He loved football! He loved the outdoors and he loved meeting people. He loved school fundraisers because he loved going door to door to sell items....and talking to people. He loved science, reading, music and philosophy. He loved learning anything and he loved loving people!
Alonzo wanted to grow up and experience adulthood too quickly....he embraced each day as if was his last.
As the 2nd year anniversary approaches, I remember what you taught me, Lonz: life is for living and for being happy. It is hard not to miss you. I miss you everyday. You have left a piece of you in all of us. Love you always, mi hijo. Love, Mom

Born in Edinburg, Texas, Alonzo Rey Samuel Garza lived every moment like it could be his last. Alonzo was born with cystic fibrosis, a condition which made it hard for him to breathe. Despite this, he was active in sports, playing all stars baseball, basketball and football. He was a born musician and artist, both in the fine and martial arts.
He avidly consumed all literature pertaining to information technology, constructing computers in his spare time for friends while working towards earning a college degree. He loved to play any genre of song on electric and acoustic guitar, although his favorite was rock. Alonzo had a tumultuous life and was trying to straighten it out for the sake of his two young daughters, ages 3 and 1.
He always accepted people for who they were on the inside, and who they could be without regard to background or physical appearance. He was constantly befriending people who had problems, trying to help them work them out. One of these individuals ended up murdering him without provocation in a senseless act of violence. His life was taken, leaving his family brokenhearted, and without a reason why.
Grieving his absence are his wife Brittney, parents, Rojelio and Maria Anna Esparza, brother Adan M. Castañeda, sisters Vanessa Castañeda and Carla Hopkins, children Layla Grace Angel and Aliya Lynn Marie, grandmother Maria del Rosario Barrera and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and friends.
We will gather at the Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009 in Schertz, TX 78154, this Thursday March 12, 2009 from 6:30-9 p.m. to say goodbye to him.

He will be buried Friday 3/13/09 at 10 a.m. at Hill Country Memorial Gardens, 11700 Hwy 46 W, New Braunfels, TX 78131.
